Your parent needs to feel like it's their decision. Even if you're doing most of the research and legwork, the final call should feel like theirs. Communities and homes chosen under pressure tend to lead to regret and resistance.

Don't assume you know what they want. A lot of adult children assume their parents want to be closer to them, or want a specific type of community. Sometimes that's true. Often, your parent has priorities you haven't asked about — social scene, specific towns, proximity to their own friends and doctors.

Understand the financial picture clearly, together. This is often the hardest conversation but the most important one. I can help facilitate a clear-eyed look at what's realistic given your parent's finances, without it feeling like an interrogation.

Give the process more time than feels necessary. Rushed downsizing decisions, especially ones driven by a health scare or family pressure, tend to go worse than ones given room to breathe.
