Montco DA warns of sophisticated new jury duty phone scam

Montgomery County officials are warning residents about a sophisticated phone scam in which callers using spoofed 610-area-code numbers impersonate a sheriff's deputy and falsely claim victims owe money for missing jury duty. The caller then pressures residents to drive to a Bitcoin ATM and deposit thousands of dollars under threat of arrest — at least one victim has lost more than $23,000. Sheriff Sean Kilkenny and District Attorney Kevin Steele stressed that no legitimate law enforcement agency ever demands cryptocurrency payment, urging anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately, record the caller's number and contact county detectives.
