Battery-powered trains proposed to link Philadelphia, Wawa, W. Chester

A meeting of commuter rail supporters met to examine again linking the SEPTA right-of-way between Wawa and West Chester by rail. This would ultimately allow workers to commute back and forth from West Chester to Philadelphia, along with access to several stations in between, on battery-powered trains. Pop-Up Metro turnkey operations would provide everything for the project, including the trains, ADA accessible platforms, the development of an operating plan, training for staff, and support for obtaining public financing. Under a short-term lease, Metro Pop-Up would lease their “Pop-Up Metro Kit’ for about $2.5 million annually, with the possibility of an outright sale two to three years later. Major funding for the proposed project has not yet been secured. In response to the proposal, SEPTA Public Information Officer John Golder released a statement saying, “Restoring rail to West Chester would require a detailed operational plan, improvements to infrastructure, and Federal Rail Administration (FRA) approval… SEPTA will continue to talk to West Chester Borough and the Rail Service Restoration Committee about the feasibility of operating these trains on a track that is shared with FRA-compliant rail cars.”
